VaccinationsPet Vaccines: Key to Good Health

Vaccinations are a vital part of your dog’s and cat’s preventive healthcare routine. At Whitworth Animal Clinic, Dr. Whitworth and our team are proud to serve Madison, AL, and surrounding communities by providing essential pet vaccinations and educating owners on how to protect their companion animals from preventable diseases.

Many serious and even life-threatening illnesses can be avoided with routine vaccines and annual boosters.

Some Diseases Can Also Affect Humans

Certain infectious diseases spread easily between animals and can remain in the environment, leading to delayed exposure and outbreaks. Some, like rabies, can also be transmitted to humans.

  • Canine distemper, parvovirus, and canine influenza can be severe or fatal, even with treatment.
  • Feline leukemia, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) are highly contagious among cats and often have no cure.

Diseases Prevented by Vaccination

Feline Distemper (Panleukopenia) & Canine Parvovirus
These diseases cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and damage to the intestinal tract. They also suppress the immune system, leaving pets vulnerable to secondary infections.

Canine Distemper
Often begins with respiratory symptoms such as sneezing and nasal discharge and can progress to neurological issues like seizures. It is highly contagious and can be fatal, especially in puppies.

Rabies
Rabies is a fatal virus affecting the central nervous system and is transmitted through saliva from infected wildlife such as raccoons, bats, and possums. It is also zoonotic, meaning it can spread to humans. Because of its severity, rabies vaccination is required by law in Alabama for all dogs and cats 12 weeks of age and older. Vaccines are given as either a 1-year or 3-year series, depending on eligibility.

Bordetella (Kennel Cough)
A highly contagious airborne respiratory infection that spreads easily in close-contact environments. It is required every six months for boarding at our clinic and is strongly recommended for dogs that visit grooming facilities, boarding centers, dog parks, or pet-friendly businesses.

Lyme Disease
The most common tick-borne disease in North America, Lyme disease is transmitted through tick bites. Symptoms include fatigue, loss of appetite, fever, and joint inflammation that can lead to lameness. Vaccination is recommended for dogs that spend time outdoors hiking, camping, or in wooded areas.

Vaccines Are Essential for Prevention

Routine vaccinations are one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your pet’s health. Like people, pets may occasionally experience mild vaccine reactions, especially after initial vaccines. These can include mild facial swelling or hives, temporary digestive upset, soreness at the injection site, or mild lethargy. Most reactions resolve within 24 hours.

If any symptoms occur, please contact our clinic right away. If your pet has had a previous reaction, we can take precautions such as pre-medication before future vaccines to ensure their comfort and safety.
