What is Pet Wellness?

Pet wellness is a proactive, whole-health approach to keeping your pet healthy and happy. Instead of only treating illness, it focuses on prevention and early detection. This includes regular veterinary exams, vaccinations, parasite prevention, balanced nutrition, dental care, and ongoing mental and physical enrichment—all working together to enhance your pet’s quality of life and support a longer, healthier lifespan.

Pet Wellness Exams

At Whitworth Animal Clinic, we provide comprehensive pet wellness services for Madison, Alabama, and surrounding communities—helping your pet stay not only healthy, but truly thrive. Our preventive care approach includes twice-yearly wellness exams, vaccinations, allergy testing, flea and parasite prevention, proper nutrition, and grooming to support long-term health and quality of life.

Wellness exams give our team the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate your pet’s overall health while also allowing Dr. Whitworth to discuss any breed-specific or individual health concerns you should monitor. Because dogs and cats age much faster than humans, significant health changes can happen quickly. For this reason, we recommend scheduling a physical exam every six months to catch potential issues early and keep your pet on the path to optimal health.

What Happens At A Pet Wellness Exam?

      • Medical History Review & Consultation: Dr. Whitworth will ask about diet, water intake, energy levels, behavior, lifestyle, and bathroom habits to assess daily health.
      • Routine Veterinary Exams:Annual or bi-annual “nose-to-tail” exams to establish a health baseline and detect early warning signs of illness.
      • Vital Signs:Measuring weight, heart rate, and body temperature.
      • Thorough physical assessment: eyes, ears, mouth, skin, joints.
    • Preventative Care:Vaccinations, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, and routine screening tests (blood work, fecal exams) to catch issues before they become serious.
    • Nutrition and Weight Management:Proper, balanced diets and maintaining a healthy weight to prevent chronic conditions.
    • Dental Health:Regular teeth cleaning to avoid periodontal disease.
    • Parasite Screening:Fecal exams for internal worms, along with heartworm and flea/tick screenings.

Blood Screening:
Even the most thorough physical exam cannot fully assess how your pet’s internal organs are functioning. Annual blood screening provides that deeper insight. This testing allows Dr. Whitworth to evaluate organ function, detect abnormal enzyme levels, and screen for conditions such as anemia, diabetes, and infections. It also helps establish a normal baseline for your pet’s health, making it easier to identify changes over time.

We recommend annual blood screening for all pets starting at two years of age. For pets seven years and older, a more comprehensive panel is advised, which includes thyroid testing and a urinalysis for a more complete picture of their health.
