Our Working Dogs

Labor Day is the America’s official commemoration of its workers’ contributions to national strength, prosperity and well-being.  There’s another  group of hard-working individuals whose dedication often goes unremarked. They may not clock in at nine and out at five, but they are an integral part of our society’s labor force. These are our working dogs – the canines that work tirelessly alongside us, offering their loyalty, intelligence, and skills.So lets celebrate the tireless loyalty of working dogs on Labor Day.

Types of Working Dogs

  • Guide Dogs: Dogs that help people with visual impairments navigate their surroundings.
  • Police Dogs: Dogs trained to assist law enforcement officers in tasks such as detection and apprehension.
  • Guard Dogs: Positioned outside of businesses and homes to keep watch and warn intruders to keep out!
  • Search and Rescue Dogs: Dogs that locate people in disaster areas or lost in the wilderness.
  • Milatary Dogs: Highly skilled, loyal canines trained for diverse missions like explosive and drug detection, security, and companionship.
  • Hunting Dogs: This working group of dogs are developed to aid hunters, possessing key traits like an exceptional sense of smell, high stamina, athleticism, and a strong prey drive to track and retrieve game. They are highly trainable, obedient, and often eager to please, making them effective partners for hunters.
  • Farm Dogs: These working dogs are a versatile working partner for farmers, performing tasks such as herding livestock, guarding against predators, controlling vermin, and providing comapnionship in isolated conditions. Farm dogs are diverse in size and function, with some breeds specializing in specific tasks and others serving a broad range of useful purposes around the farm. 
  • Service Dogs: Dogs that assist individuals with a variety of disabilities by performing tasks that enhance their independence and quality of life.
  • Companion Dogs: These are the dogs that many of us rely on. Our household pets who are always there for us. They keep us company when we are alone. Thaey make us happy when we are sad. They greet us us with a wag and wiggle when we return from a long day at work. That makes them the best type of working dogs for millions of ordinary working people.

Labor Dog Day to All Working Dogs

This Labor Day, Whitworth Animal Clinic wants to honor all the working dogs: service, therapy, police, guard, sight, herding, trackers, detection, military and search, rescue dogs, and our every day 24/7 home companion dogs.

Labor Day is usually the day that we celebrate people throughout the United States who have hard-working jobs, but where is the Labor Day for working dogs? They work just as hard, for long hours without pay (besides love and treats) and never complain. Let us take this opportunity to recognize their amazing work.
